A capsule wardrobe concept is, for the most part, easy for a pregnant woman :) like me because I have basically relied on leggings and long sweaters for two months now (and probably will for the next few). Man I love winter! There’s something seriously cozy about soft, non skin revealing clothes that makes it the kindest season to go through pregnant.
As I round the home stretch of this pregnancy, it’s easy for me to look back at a few classics that I have relied on again and again to get me through those droll days (you know, the ones where you’re feeling twice your weight, when you can’t see your toes and you almost want to carry your belly with both hands up stairs and such). I’m sorting clothes to store in our garage as we prepare for the master bedroom remodel and it’s been an easy chore as I basically box up everything past the first ten or so items hanging in my closet. Those are now my only go-tos.
I wish I could be one of those adorable Instagram mommas who at 40 weeks are sporting button up white oxford shirts and colorful cardigans like it ain’t no thang, but what I most want is a dark, near mono chromatic wardrobe full of soft cottons and really no patterns. I love to mix and match the whole batch so keeping colors in the same family is helpful.

A couple of details on some of my favorites:
J Crew’s long merino sweaters are amazing. I bought 4 in a size too big (over the course of this pregnancy and the previous, snatch them up when they offer their 40% discounts) and I wear them every day. I think I will forever (just don’t dry them! eek!). I own a few pairs of leggings (two by Motherhood and one by Storq) and the latter is by far the comfiest black legging in the whole wide world. Wow.
Because we’re in San Diego we often have high 60’s/low 70 degree weather in the winter, so I’ve found that layering super soft and baggy tanks (something like this one) with a cardigan is a win-win to go from office to outside to home. I don’t take off the cardigan but I do love the single layer without having to actually wear a single layer. I also love a basic long tank to go under sweaters, tees, everything – black (even better if it doubles as a nursing tank), white (so soft), striped (this guy’s on sale for $3, though I found mine at a consignment store). That blue crossover sweater is from Anthropologie and while it’s prone to small snags it has been a life saver.
I am using a few of my summer dresses as tunics these days (you’ll recognize a few from here and here) and I found this maxi back near Halloween and love it so. Though I cut it short because I’m very short and maxis swallow me whole while pregnant. Most of my oversized long sleeve tops are from a seconds shop like Buffalo Exchange, but my go-to for boatneck sweaters has been Nordstroms and J Crew. I also buy big because roomie is oh-so cozy pregnant or not.
On the shoes front, I’m sporting my riding boots with wool socks or these super soft ballet flats most days. My Uggs see their fair share of time because they’re, well, amazing.
For fancier events, this lace shift dress and a pair of suede booties has pulled through time and again (mine are also by Sam Edelman but can’t seem to find them in stores any longer, I’m wearing them at my baby shower here and the shift dress here). And what to do if you only own 5-6 tops and a few cardigans that fit you this late in the prego game? Rely on scarves. Lots and lots of scarves :).
Do you have any pregnancy favorites? Oh do share if you do!
PS Twice is a great online second’s shop and Hautelook is a Nordstrom online daily deals site that is similar to The Rack (those are both referral links). My other pregnancy favorites are ASOS – their maternity section is amazing!, J Crew, Banana and Target. More style board posts right here.

Even without a baby belly, I’m right there with you on preferring slim pants and an oversize, long sweater or tunic these days. I’m a terrible resource for pregnancy clothes, though, because I got a lot of shopping urges while pregnant! (I did seem to always come back to my stretchy black pants, though. They were super comfy.

Oversized, long sweaters and tunics are THE BEST.

Thanks for this! We’re in between babies right now, and I’m having trouble figuring out what I can buy to wear now (still have loose belly skin, ugh but mostly I need looser stuff for chasing my little guy around!) that I can still wear for at least part of my next pregnancy.

I think the exact same way – I love clothing that is versatile because I love to get the most out of it. Looking back on this list I was surprised to see that I had only included maybe 3 or 4 actual maternity items! :-)
