I have a special guest to introduce to you all today. Erin from House of Earnest is popping over to share her answers to PDB’s Friday Guest Interview questions and I know you’ll love her inspiration and answers!
Through House of Earnest, Erin chronicles her favorite home decor, entertaining ideas and crafty solutions. She’s so talented – what I’m drawn to most is her unique spin on the everyday and the beautiful way she captures it all with the photos she shares. Take these gold + avocado seed place settings, for example. How beautiful! Or these gold foil confetti tumblers that I’m dying to try, these incredibly unique crated photos, or the lacquered animal bookends that Erin reveals in the the new 5th question addition that I’ve added to this series (after 3 years of hosting this little Friday special with just four great questions on inspiration and trends – I’m introducing a new favorite DIY-related Q&A addition, and you must check out Erin’s answer).
Or how about this beautiful summery brunch? See… so talented.
Erin was recently named as one of the “Best Up-And-Coming” blogs by a panel at Altitude Design Summit, she writes for Etsy twice a month and has been featured over at design*sponge and HGTV.com. Thank you for joining us today, Erin! Come check out all of her answers and inspirational photos after the jump.

What inspires your design style?
The weather influences me so much. Between the feeling is outside, what flowers are in bloom, and the smell in the air, I can constantly draw from natural inspiration to give my style that extra dose of passion. I also take a lot from fashion and the colors and fabrics that people want to surround themselves with.

What do you love most about what you do?
I love the freedom of not knowing what is next. I don’t know what trend will strike around the corner and what my interpretation of it will be. It’s all a mystery and offers such a sense of opportunity.

What are your favorite design trends?
Gold and Brass top my list right now. I love that these two finishes are classics that in some sense have always been in style, but the various ways to style them are what matters the most.

What are three design suggestions that you would like to offer our readers?
{1.} Be comfortable – if a design doesn’t work for how you live, you won’t like it.

{2.} Go one step further – I am a minimalist at heart and often stop short. Adding just one more pattern, texture, or color can be the pop that makes the difference.
{3.} When in doubt, stay in the same color family. People often freeze up when mixing and matching pieces. Staying in the same color family, but varying texture, scales of pattern, and mixing in a ton of neutrals will create a varied, but cohesive look.
Can you share a favorite DIY project and why you loved creating it?
My favorite DIY that I’ve done recently was these lacquered animal bookends. They were so so easy, really fun to make, and are so current from a trend perspective. People ask me all the time where I got them and I feel so proud to answer, “I made them!”
Thank you, Erin!
