Happy 3rd Birthday, Livy Girl

My sweet Liv is now three. It’s hard to believe that not so long ago she changed our lives in a big way on that special day when she entered our cozy two person family – and the past three years have been somewhat of a blur of excitement, joy, patience, practice and unconditional love. Now it is even harder to imagine what life was like before her arrival.

Our kind, generous, spunky girl is growing up.

She has the most adventurous soul (even when it comes to eating!), prefers dancing to walking, has mastered the ‘furrowed brow’ when angry, loves her sister so much I worry her cuddles and hugs will leave marks.

When I wake up I am excited to meet a Livy smile and a crazy mane of bed head hair. I love her beautiful curly ringlets – especially after a bath and before I scoop them up into little piles of adorable pigtails on her head (if she lets me). Before we go to sleep each night she reads books with daddy and I tell her a story about sisters Princess Olive & Princess Teacup (she still hasn’t made the connection). Then we say our prayers and she tells me everything that she’s grateful for that day. She mentions things like ‘sunshine’ and ‘my new bed’ and ‘Bodie, our dog’.

I love that her favorite saying is ‘is that a great idea, mommy?’, as she propositions me for a fun activity or treat (I’ll admit that I give in often). I love that she scrunches her nose up when she says ‘silly goose’ (her new term for just about everything).

When she’s tired of me looking at the computer in the evening, she tells me that she has to ‘get some work done’ and turns it towards her to practice typing her name on the keyboard. One little index finger meets one key after another in a concentrated click, click, click.

I am a cuddler and I’ve done my best to raise a cuddler. I love it most when she asks if I’ll hold her and when she tells me ‘I love you, momma’ in her sweet, sincere little voice. I love when she draws circles on my arms out of habit because I’ve practiced that soothing technique for so long on her.

I have loved the journey.

Baby girl, I didn’t know what being a mom meant until I met you – I love you so much.

Liv’s birth story & newborn photos (still makes me sniffle! The photos for one reason, the birth story for another ;-)). Liv’s first year in a series of b&w photos with her giant bear.

Good Eats: Lavender & Lemon French Toast

Do you know what sounds so good right now? French toast. It’s one of my very favorite brunch foods (besides these).

I like my french toast to be really thick. Like slab thick. So thick that you have the option to stuff it if you have ricotta or cream cheese lying around (oh man, that sounds just too good at this moment). Brioche is always the best, but in a grocery store pinch a nice loaf of sourdough will do.

Many people will share many different secrets in the french toast department that have to do with egg consistency and cream and just the right amount of cinnamon and nutmeg… but for me it’s all about what goes on top of said breakfast. What warm deliciousness the toast marinates in as it soaks up goodness right off of your plate.

And my favorite french toast topper? It might be this lavender and lemon citrusy simple syrup (which sounds way fancier than it is) that we made with friends for a late morning brunch.

On to the stove and into a sauce pan go 2 or so cups of water plus 1.5 to 2 ish cups of sugar. Add the juice of 2 large lemons + grated rind of one lemon + fresh lavender sprigs (I snip mine from the garden and wash well), bring to a boil and then a simmer until all of the sugar has dissolved.

Meanwhile on the skillet, add your heavily dunked bread slabs (I like eggs + cream + a little splash of vanilla + cinnamon) and sauté.

Sprinkle course sea salt (I know, crazy) and the rind of your second grated lemon over the very warm slices of bread, generously coat in the lavender lemon syrup.

And then enjoy! With good friends, bottomless mimosas and fresh fruit.

Oh man, I love weekends.

Girls’ Room: New Window Seat Cushion (Finally)

This room is officially the hardest room to photograph in our house. It’s light and bright in person (especially with all of that white wood work going on around the three windows), but on my camera? Dark, dark, dark. Even on a tripod at the lowest shutter speed possible. Unless the windows are washed out, as they are here. Driving me crazy. (PS very talented camera friends, how do I fix this?)

But I digress! The new cushion for the window seat for the girls’ room is in.

It’s velvety soft, a sort of burgundy-meets-rust color, a great ‘pop’ in a girly space. I picked up that striped pillow cover from Ikea and pulled the others from around the house. To be determined how this might all come together once the roman shades are hung and all of the patterns come together.

It’s scrunching a little, I might be able to get some more cushy batting in there.

Do you remember this post? Liv and I were really considering green or mustard for the window seat, but then finding a roman shade fabric for the windows that played nicely with the wallpaper and potential green/mustard was proving too difficult (hence the lull in any nursery post updates for a few months back around Taylor’s birth. I was officially stuck.)

When I finally moved on from finding a contrasting color (to all of the pink in the room), and embraced the pink, I found it. The perfect cushion fabric for the space.

Yep, we’re going all girl up in here.

Blog sponsor Calico Corners provided the super soft fabric, you can find it here. It was so easy to work with and is so soft. (Ordering swatches with Calico before committing is very easy, too).

To create a cushion long enough to fit the full seat, a 72″ piece of foam was adhered to scrap chunks until it was 90″ in length. With a foam glue spray this cushion is now securely held together.

I wrapped the top and front in a thin batting as well for extra cushion.

My local alterations/dry cleaning store created the basic box cushion for $35 (I’ve visited them many times for sewing projects just like this, they are usually a quick, quality and low cost solution for just such projects). Quick tip: use an industrial/high quality zipper rather than a fabric zipper for upholstery projects.

Finished! The new window seat is looking good and is feeling very comfy these days. The bench is just wide enough for curling up with a good book, and the gold sconces above provide the perfect amount of light.

PDB partnered with Calico Corners to share this post with you – they’ve been a long time supporter of this blog and I personally love the quality and selection of fabric that they offer!
