Taylor’s 1st Birthday

This past Sunday we celebrated Taylor’s first birthday with family, friends and a yummy BBQ. I kept it as simple as I could and focused on good, fresh food and a basic build-your-own style of bar. Having just arrived back home after 10 days of travel it was good for me to fall back on my favorites. My go-to party supplies for these sorts of festive events tend to be: paper lanterns, fresh flowers, fabric remnants (to create a table runner, line trays, etc) and classic white dishes. Most from my stash! I invested in a new remnant table runner ($3/yard) and three new paper lanterns decor wise. Love that feeling. Even if parties ’round our house eventually start to feel very similar :).

We fit 40 or 50 of our favorite friends into our cozy outdoor space, turned up some music and enjoyed a warm, sunny afternoon. Couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out!

My margarita spread was quickly supplemented with a build-your-own bloody mary bar a la the hubby, too ;).

The menu included: a cherry tomato, mozzarella, basil and balsamic salad – a summer honeydew plus cucumber and feta salad – a savory quinoa and avocado salad – watermelon, blackberry, feta and mint skewers – crispy coleslaw –  baked figs with goat cheese and honey – grilled corn covered in melted lime butter and cotija cheese – amazing ‘fresh from the baker’ Mexican torta rolls and Kev’s overnight smoked pork shoulder sandwiches – homemade lemon sorbet and watermelon berry sorbet – sunflower sugar cookies. I had LOTS of help assembling. Recipes for my favorites to come.

As it goes with most one-year-olds, Taylor had no idea what to do with her little smash cake. Until all of Livy’s little friends introduced her to ‘icing’.

T’s actual birthday is this coming Friday but Kevin and I are celebrating our seven year wedding anniversary with a quick trip to Catalina Island. The corn on the cob turned out to be Taylor’s FAVORITE of the entire party. She carried it around with her most of the event and barely traded it in for cake for a few minutes after much coaxing.

Love this girl to pieces. Can’t believe that she’s already one.

Weekend Fun: Father’s Day at Wilder Ranch

You guys. It’s been so long since I have pulled out a real (and by that I mean not iPhone) camera. Those SLRs can be really clunky to carry around, right? especially when you’re toting a baby… or 2. But the photos! Love the freedom to adjust, adjust, adjust. I spent last weekend up in Santa Cruz, California – my old stomping grounds – with my brother and family for his graduation. While there we celebrated Father’s Day with a long hike that started at an old farm called Wilder’s Ranch. One of my favorite places to spend an afternoon.

Took the last two photos the day earlier, I’m not sure I have a smiley photo of the three of us? Also, I post-edited several of these photos with A Beautiful Mess’s photoshop actions (I love petal and magnolia best right now).

Kevin couldn’t join us on this trip because of work, we celebrated Father’s Day with him the weekend before. Love you, Dad! What a fun day to spend with my girls, my brothers and sister, my family.

Six June Recipes

Good Eats | Recipes to Try: June | PepperDesignBlog.com

Sometimes a recipe catches my eye in a magazine or on Pinterest and I’m just dying to give it a go. Here are six that are mouth-wateringly perfect for the month of June. Truth be told it might take me the full summer but I’m determined to try these out. I’m actually thinking the lemon meyer yogurt cake would be so great for Taylor’s 1st birthday, perhaps I’ll be giving it a go Saturday!

Lately I’m digging one (or close) pot/skillet dinners (see 1 & 3), simple twists on classic desserts (strawberry lemonade lemon bar?) and easy but unique ‘why didn’t I think of that’ moments (4).

1 | Almond crusted thyme and sage chicken with roasted brussel sprouts

2 | Cinnamon roll skillet cake (this is too easy)

3 | Sweet potato, kale and sausage bake with white cheese sauce

4 | Grilled caesar salad (so simple! perfect when the grill is already fired up)

5 | Lemon Meyer iced raspberry yogurt cake

6 | Strawberry lemonade bars (this is inspiring new takes on my family’s classic lemon bar recipe)
