Guest Blog Interview: Going Home to Roost

I have a wonderful blog to share with you all today. This post is coming to you a day earlier than it usually might because I’m moving away from posting guest blog interviews only on Fridays to loosen up my editorial calendar just a little bit. An experiment of sorts :).

I’ve shared Roost Tribe with you all before and it remains to be one of my favorite sources for beautiful illustrations to share here on the blog or to incorporate into my graphic design work. Imagine my happy surprise (I shouldn’t have been surprised, really) to discover that Bonnie of Going Home to Roost has one of the most lovely, light-filled, handmade homes I’ve come across. Her blog is a delicious mix of design inspiration, handmade ideas (quilts, patterns, recipes), tutorials and green living. I’ve been a follower for just about a year now.

And she is just as lovely to communicate and collaborate with as she appears :). I am delighted that she has taken a few moments to share her thoughts on home and design today on the blog.

What inspires your design style?

my inspirations always come from nature. i love to garden and spend time outside, so i’m constantly inspired by the greatest of trees and the tiniest of leaves! flowers, woodland creatures and foliage of all kinds constantly show up in my work.

What do you love most about what you do?

this is hard, i love every part of it! the design process itself (dreaming, sketching, illustrating and repeating) is all fabulous. i get so enveloped in each step of the process. it also brings me so much joy to see others create with what i make. there are so many talented sewers and crafters out there, seeing their creations is always so much fun!

What are your favorite design trends?

well of course, i love that the woodland theme is still ‘trendy’ because that’s where my heart is. i’ve also been loving watercolor textures and geometrics lately as well!

What are three design suggestions that you would like to offer readers?

1) take your camera (or iphone) with you everywhere you go.

2) don’t ever throw a sketch away (you never know when it will come in handy!).

3) be authentic and original. :)

Can you share a favorite DIY project and why you loved creating it?

yes! i just finished making several pillow cases to doll up our guest room with. i love all the pops of color it brings to the room!
