When I was a 12 or so, my cousin hand made stockings for each member in the family. I can’t think of a more personal and lovely gift to give during the holiday season! Mismatched, quilted, knitted, refashioned — what a neat vintage Christmas feel to have a series of handmade stockings hanging from the fireplace.
Stockings above by Made and the garland of stockings below found at Martha Stewart Living. The Furbish Theory on Etsy has designed these beautiful stockings (bottom of collage) out of simple, organic materials.
I’ve pulled together inspiration for your own handmade stockings using every kind of material you can think of. Don’t have the time to make stockings from scratch? Embellish store bought ones with buttons, broaches, lace or felt cut outs.
Get the kids involved too — it will be a keepsake they hold on to for a lifetime. I still cherish my handmade stocking and honor it as a special gift by hanging it up each Christmas! MUCH more inspiration after the jump.
How cute are the ‘real’ shoes! Find more great inspiration (of course) at Martha Stewart Living.
Photopostblog features this collection of handmade felt stockings (above) and Blackbird custom designs each of these original stockings to order (below).
More Martha, and a few personalized creations showcased over at BHG! Ideas from using an old pair of knit socks to embellished store bought stockings.
I adore Shiso Mama‘s stockings designed around the personality of each member of her family:
Pretty DIY garland from knit socks and letters that I think could easily be replicated by embellishing toddler socks with lettering and hanging from a single strand of red yard (image from Martha Stewart).
Hable offers a beautiful eco-friendly line (above). and Martha shares more favorites (below). I especially love the cashmere looking (it’s actually mohair) grey stockings on the right!
Amenity Modern Organic Living’s take on hemp stockings (top of collage) and these upcycled stockings by Etsy artist RikRak who promotes modern and sustainable patchwork.
Enough inspiration… now it’s time to get to work!
